Master craftsperson of the month – Juan Manuel Gabarrón Gómez

Juan Manuel Gabarrón Gómez has been selected by the Traditional Building Cultures Foundation and INTBAU Spain as master craftsperson of the month for November 2025.

The Gabarrón pottery and ceramics workshop, founded in 1989 in Guadix, preserves a local pottery tradition that spans more than five centuries. Its master craftsman, Juan Manuel Gabarrón, shapes each piece by hand on the wheel, remaining faithful to the ornamental forms characteristic of Accitan ceramics. He also undertakes special commissions, restorations, and reproductions. Among his most valued works are plates, bowls, and basins decorated with traditional Granada motifs, as well as ceramic murals and decorative plaques for streets and institutions.

Gabarrón preserves the production of the Accitan jug, an emblematic piece from Guadix that was revived in the 1970s and has been used by the Spanish Royal Household as an official gift. Although his work is rooted in tradition, he incorporates technical innovations such as the use of electric or diesel kilns and machines for recycling and kneading clay, which make the process more efficient without altering the craft’s artisanal essence.
