2025 Iberian Summer School

The new edition of the Iberian Summer School on Traditional Architecture, organized by the Traditional Building Cultures Foundation in collaboration with INTBAU Spain and INTBAU Portugal, will take place in the area of the white villages, between the provinces of Cádiz and Málaga, being the headquarters in Ronda. During two weeks, the traditional urbanism, architecture, and building details of the region will be studied in order to work on a design proposal for the area.

Various site visits will also be organized, along with demonstrations by master craftspeople, and several experts in traditional architecture will give lectures each day. Hand drawing and measuring buildings will be the main activity to be developed during these two intense weeks.

– Program –

Monday, 7th

Early in the morning, the group will depart from Málaga to Ronda, following the introduction of all faculty and participants. They will have a brief time to accommodate and a series of introductory lectures will be held. In the afternoon, an introductory tour of Ronda will take place.

Tuesday, 8th

A bus will take the group to visit and study Zahara de la Sierra, with the aim of observing, photographing, and sketching the local architecture and building details, as well as analyzing the urban fabric. In the afternoon, lectures will be held.

Wednesday, 9th

A bus will transport the group to visit and study Grazalema, with the aim of observing, photographing, and sketching the local architecture and building details, as well as analyzing the urban fabric. In the afternoon, lectures will be held.

Thursday, 10th

The day will be dedicated to surveying, drawing, and studying Ronda, with the goal of generating the necessary groundwork for the design work that will take place the following week. In the afternoon, lectures will be held.

Friday, 11th

The day will be dedicated to surveying, drawing, and studying Ronda, with the goal of generating the necessary groundwork for the design work that will take place the following week. In the afternoon, lectures will be held.

Saturday, 12th

In the morning, there will be demonstrations of traditional building techniques. In the afternoon the group will put together, review and complete the work already developed.

Sunday, 13th

Free day. In the afternoon, an introductory lecture will be held on topics that will be relevant for the work in the second week.

Monday, 14th

Various design case studies will be identified and assigned to different groups, who will develop several improvement proposals for the urban areas around Ronda. In the evening there will be brief lectures on new traditional architecture and urbanism design.

July 15 – July 18

During the full day participants, divided into several groups, will use the developed research and manual to design different upgrade proposals for the studied areas. In the evening there will be brief lectures on new traditional architecture and urbanism design.

Saturday, 19th

Final edition of the design proposals and the patterns manual in the morning. In the afternoon, a public presentation of the design proposals will be scheduled. In the evening a final group dinner will be organised.

Sunday, 20th

A bus will take the group to Málaga in the morning.
