On August 9, the stonemasonry training program delivered by the Traditional Building Cultures Foundation in collaboration with the Royal Institute of Traditional Arts (WRTH)<\/strong> began in the Asir region of Saudi Arabia, as part of the Traditional Stone Building Techniques Apprenticeship Programme<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n

After just over a month of training, the students have already completed the first four modules of the program. During these first five weeks, the course has progressed from an introduction to the traditional architecture of Asir, its materials and construction systems, to hands-on work with stone and the construction of walls and arches. <\/p>\n\n

This first phase has combined theoretical instruction, drawing, technical visits, demonstrations and, to an increasing extent, practical work. The sequence of modules allows the knowledge and skills acquired at each stage to provide a foundation for the next, while progressively introducing students to the different aspects involved in the traditional craft of stone construction. <\/p>\n\n

Module 1: Traditional Architecture, Territory and Local Materials<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The first module, taught by Alba Castrill\u00f3n<\/strong> with the participation of Alejandro Garc\u00eda Hermida<\/strong>, Executive Director of the Traditional Building Cultures Foundation, was designed to provide students with a foundation of knowledge from which to approach the craft of stonemasonry and the traditional architecture of Asir.<\/p>\n\n

The classes explored the relationship between architecture, territory, climate, and the availability of materials, with particular attention to how these conditions have historically shaped the region\u2019s construction solutions. The students also studied basic concepts of geology and the identification of local stone types, as well as traditional processes for stone extraction and sourcing. <\/p>\n\n

An important part of the module focused on the analysis of Asir\u2019s traditional construction systems, including dry-stone walls and solutions combining stone, earth, and juniper wood. The module also introduced principles of masonry bonding and structural behavior, common building pathologies, and issues related to sustainability and the use of locally sourced materials. <\/p>\n\n

The aim of this first week was to provide a framework for understanding the techniques that would be developed in subsequent modules as part of a building culture closely connected to the region\u2019s resources, landscape, and ways of life.<\/p>\n\n

Module 2: Drawing, Surveying and Architectural Representation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

During the second week, Miguel Sobrino Gonz\u00e1lez<\/strong>, coordinator of the program in Abha, introduced the students to different techniques of architectural drawing and representation.<\/p>\n\n

The students worked on freehand sketching, with particular attention to understanding the overall composition and structure of buildings before addressing their details. They also received an introduction to watercolor, with exercises on color mixing, washes, the use of different brushes, and techniques for preserving the white of the paper. <\/p>\n\n

The module also introduced basic concepts of perspective, such as the horizon line and vanishing points, as well as an introduction to architectural surveying. As part of this work, the students measured a small stone structure and began working with concepts such as plan, elevation, section, and graphic scale. <\/p>\n\n

Some of this knowledge was later applied during a drawing session in the historic settlement of Al-Akkas, where the students were able to engage directly with the observation and representation of traditional architecture. Drawing was approached as a tool for learning how to observe, analyze, measure, and document buildings. <\/p>\n\n

Module 3: Basic Stonemasonry Tools and Techniques<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The third module marked the beginning of hands-on work with stone. Stonemason Gaetan Chapel introduced the students to the tools of the trade, the different stages involved in shaping a piece of stone, and the procedures required to control its geometry throughout the process. <\/p>\n\n

After an initial introduction to the use of the tools, each student began working individually on a piece of stone. The first exercise consisted of producing a flat, even surface. Using this as a reference plane, the students began cutting chamfers and gradually progressed towards more complex geometries. <\/p>\n\n

This seemingly elementary exercise provided an opportunity to work on some of the fundamental principles of stonemasonry: establishing precise references before proceeding, carrying out each operation in the correct sequence, and continuously checking the dimensions and geometry of the piece. In this way, the students were able to experience first-hand the precision, control, and patience required for working stone by hand. <\/p>\n\n

The demonstrations and exercises were complemented by explanations of different applications of the craft and the various approaches to the work depending on the characteristics of each piece. By the end of the module, all the students had completed this initial phase and had acquired a foundation on which to continue developing their tool-handling skills throughout the program. <\/p>\n\n

Module 4: Construction of Stone Walls, Traditional Mortars and Stone Arches<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The fourth module, taught over two weeks by master mason Marcos P\u00e9rez<\/strong>, marked the transition from working with stone as an individual piece to understanding how different stones are selected, positioned, and connected to one another to form a structure.<\/p>\n\n

The work began with an introduction to the fundamental principles of traditional stone construction: contact between the stones and load transfer. The students also learned how to organize the worksite and use string lines, straightedges, and plumb lines to control the alignment, verticality, and geometry of the walls. <\/p>\n\n

During the practical exercises, the students worked on selecting and handling stones, laying the first courses, and resolving bonding patterns, junctions, and corners. They also practiced placing smaller stones as internal infill, as well as the subsequent cleaning and pointing of the masonry. <\/p>\n\n

The module also included a specific introduction to traditional mortars. The students studied different types of lime, aggregates, and earth, prepared earth mixes stabilized with lime, and carried out various formulation and application tests. This allowed them to understand the role of mortar within the masonry as a whole and the properties contributed by its different components. <\/p>\n\n

During the second part of the module, the students undertook a more complex exercise: the construction of a stone arch. They first studied its elements and structural principles, then prepared and installed the centering and began selecting and placing the stones, working from the springing points towards the keystone. <\/p>\n\n

The exercise culminated in the removal of the centering, allowing the students to observe directly how the structure behaved once the temporary support was removed. Finally, they carried out a series of mortar tests to determine the most appropriate color, texture, and joint thickness for the pointing. <\/p>\n\n

Five Weeks of Progressive Learning<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The first four modules have followed a sequence that forms the foundation of the program: understanding the region\u2019s architecture and materials, learning to observe and represent them, acquiring the first skills in working with stone, and finally beginning to build with it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Over these weeks, the course has progressed from a theoretical and analytical approach towards increasingly practical learning. The students have begun to familiarize themselves with the logic of construction processes: the selection of materials, the sequence of operations, geometric control, structural behavior, and the relationship between the different parts of a building. <\/p>\n\n

Over the coming months, new master craftspeople and professionals will join the program to explore in greater depth other techniques and areas of knowledge related to traditional stone construction and the architecture of Asir.<\/p>\n\n
