Spain and Portugal are fortunate to have such essential individuals and institutions and they deserve to be recognized.<\/p><p>The Richard H. Driehaus Medal for Heritage Preservation is an award given since 2019 together with the Rafael Manzano Prize for New Traditional Architecture. This distinction takes the patronage of Richard H. Driehaus himself as a model and is intended to honour stewards who, in public or private bodies, have made significant contributions to the conservation of heritage and to giving continuity to the architectural traditions of Spain and Portugal: entrepreneurs, developers, managers of foundations and leaders or promoters of other initiatives and institutions.<\/p><p>There is no cash award associated with this prize but a medal, designed by Rafael Manzano Martos, is given during the Rafael Manzano Prize ceremony at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. A video about the laurate is shown during the ceremony.<\/p><p>Entries are judged by the Manzano Prize Jury supplemented with up to three additional persons likely to know of potential candidates for jury evaluates candidates based on the degree to which they have exemplified one or more of the following activities:<\/li><li>Patronage of preservation and\/or restoration of historic sites and structures demonstrating a sense of place.<\/li><li>Promotion and\/or development of new construction in keeping with the traditional identity of a heritage location.<\/li><li>Promotion of intangible or material cultural heritage.<\/li><li>Widespread dissemination of information about the value of built and\/or cultural heritage.<\/li><li>Advocacy for preservation, restoration or appropriate addition to endangered heritage sites, structures or cultural elements.<\/li><li>Innovative leadership that provides models for successful heritage preservation and the practice of traditional English summarizing the reasons why the nominee should receive this award.<\/li><li>Two recommendation letters signed by persons knowledgeable about one or more instances where the nominee has demonstrated the characteristics listed in the criteria.<\/li><li>Description of up to six instances where the support of the nominee has been instrumental in supporting heritage preservation and\/or the defense of traditional architecture and the restoration, both internationally and locally in Spain and Portugal.<\/p><p>In the current edition, the Prize Jury is chaired by Leopoldo Gil and composed of Jos\u00e9 Baganha, Mieke Bosse, Melissa DelVecchio, Leon Krier, Michael Lykoudis, Rafael Manzano, Ram\u00f3n Mayo, Enrique Nuere, Stefanos Polyzoides, and Alexandre de Resende. In 1991 he founded his own practice, from which he designed residential, hotel, retail and urbanism projects that continue the traditions of the regions in which he works. He has lectured at the Architecture Faculties of the Portuguese Catholic University in Viseu and Sintra and been a visiting lecturer at several European universities. He founded INTBAU Portugal, cofounded the European Council of Spatial Planners and is a member of the board of the Architectural Heritage Chapter of the Portuguese Institute of Architects. Her firm, Scala, carries out projects in restoration, rehabilitation, and new construction, with a strong focus on housing and neighborhood design. Community participation and the ability to effectively translate residents\u2019 input into viable and sustainable projects remain central to her work. Vernacular design, inspired by local traditions, has been a key element in her projects from the beginning, including Brandevoort, which she is currently working on. He has devoted his career to the building, study and promotion of traditional architecture and urbanism. His activities feature the organization of several major conferences that have been collaborations between Notre Dame and other organizations including the Classical Architecture League and the Institute of Classical Architecture &amp; Classical America, A Vision of Europe and the Congress for New Urbanism. The international conference and exhibition entitled The Art of Building Cities, took place in 1995 at the Art Institute of Chicago and was the first event in this country to specifically link the practice of contemporary classicism with the new traditional urbanism.<\/p>\n<p>Dean Lykoudis is the co-editor of: <em>Building Cities<\/em>, published in 1999 by Artmedia Press, and <em>The Other Modern<\/em> exhibition catalogue published in 2000 by Dogma Press. At Notre Dame, Dean Lykoudis has served the School in a number of capacities, first as the Director of Undergraduate Studies, then as Associate Chair and Chair prior to becoming Dean. As Director of Undergraduate Studies for over 10 years he was the principal organizer of the new classical and urban curriculum, and Dean Lykoudis established several new initiatives within the School of Architecture.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2003, he has served as chair of the Richard H. Driehaus Prize jury. The Driehaus Prize honors, promotes and encourages architectural excellence that applies the principles of traditional, classical and sustainable architecture and urbanism in contemporary society and environments. A graduate of Cornell University, Dean Lykoudis earned his Master\u2019s degree from the University of Illinois\u2019 joint business administration and architecture program. Prior to joining the Notre Dame faculty, he worked as a project designer and architect for firms in Florida, Greece, Connecticut and New York. He has directed his own practice since 1983 in Athens, Stamford, CT. and now in South Bend, IN. His work has been published in the national and international architectural journals as well as in the popular press. He has devoted his life to the study of Classicism and in particular the Islamic world, and he has built new traditional buildings and restored numerous historic constructions in Spain, the US and the Middle East. He was Director-Conservator at the Reales Alc\u00e1zares palace in Seville and the caliphal town of Medina Azahara near C\u00f3rdoba, and chaired the works committee of the Royal Board of Trustees for the Alhambra and the Generalife. He is a member of many Spanish academic bodies, including the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts. His work has been distinguished with the Gold Medal for the Fine Arts, among other awards, and he is also Commander (with a plaque) of the Civil Order of Alfonso X the Wise. He also won the Richard H. From 1973 to 1997 he was Associate Professor of Architecture at the University of Southern California and currently he is Dean of the University of Notre Dame School of Architecture (Indiana). He is co-author of <i>Los Angeles Courtyard Housing: A Typological Analysis<\/i> (1977), <i>The Plazas of New Mexico<\/i> (2012), and author of <i>R.M. Schindler, Architect<\/i> (1982), among many other publications. He is a member of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando (Madrid), of the Academia de San Telmo (M\u00e1laga), of the Real Academia de San Miguel Arc\u00e1ngel (Santa Cruz de Tenerife), of the Academia del Partal and a member of the board of trustees of the Alhambra and the Generalife (1986-1995).<\/p>\n<p>Since the 80s, he focuses his activity both in restoration and in teaching, becoming an specialist in historic carpentry, having written diverse books and articles on this topic. In 1979 he worked as a site manager, where he learnt in depth the traditional building crafts by team work, and became especially interested in interventions in historic buildings.<br \/>In 1987 he established Kalam, creating his own team that covered the basic disciplines of rehabilitation: traditional masonry, carpentry, artistic plumbing in lead and zinc, plasters, sgraffito, painting on canvas, panel painting and wall painting, coffered ceilings, mosaics, etc. That team grew becoming a thousand professionals worldwide who count on the EOAK (Kalam\u2019s Crafts School) for training. Besides, they also develop projects that contribute to the improvement of heritage conservation through EKABA (Kalam Space for the Fine Arts), including cultural and social initiatives and events.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, during the Annual Europa Nostra Congress, he received a Special Mention in the Category of Dedication to the Service of Heritage from the European Union Awards for Cultural Heritage \/ Europa Nostra 2016 Contest.
