A wide range of projects, reflections, initiatives and programmes were presented on the topic of traditional construction, architecture and urban planning as tools for creating or preserving the identity of each place. Issues such as memory, tradition, intangible heritage, local shapes, materials and resources, the creation and strengthening of communities linked to the place, the local economy, etc. were discussed. <\/p>\n

The speakers presented different approaches to this subject: from the large scale of design or the transformation of neighbourhoods and cities punished by various conflicts or by the disinterest, abandonment and even negligence of those in charge, to the small scale of the trades specific to each territory and culture and their transmission to future generations, as well as a more theoretical point of view that highlights the diversity of interpretations and debates surrounding the recent interventions that have taken place in heritage sites from all time periods.<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The Architecture and Place Making International Seminar was organized by INTBAU (International Network for Traditional Building, Architecture and Urbanism) and the Rafael Manzano Prize for New Traditional Architecture, thanks to the support of the Richard H. Driehaus Charitable Lead Trust, through a grant from the Chicago Community Foundation for the Richard H. Driehaus Charitable Fund, and the collaboration of the Universidad Polit\u00e9cnica de Madrid, the Escola Superior Gallaecia, the Universidad Alfonso X el Sabio, the Funda\u00e7\u00e3o Serra Henriques and the Centro de Investigaci\u00f3n de Arquitectura Tradicional (CIAT-UPM). It was held on 7, 8 November 2017 at the Universidad Polit\u00e9cnica de Madrid School of Architecture.
On the first day, the Seminar was inaugurated by Manuel Blanco Lage, Director of the School of Architecture that hosted the seminar, Javier Cenicacelaya, President of INTBAU Spain and Alejandro Garc\u00eda Hermida, Coordinator of the initiatives developed in Spain by INTBAU with the support of the Richard H. Driehaus Charitable Lead Trust.<\/p>\n

The first session began with the intervention of Rafael Manzano, who presented the recomposition of a house in C\u00e1diz, updating and recovering the architectural traditions of C\u00e1diz. Also taking part were L\u00e9on Krier, who explained his Master Plan for the city of Rimini, Italy, and the winners of the Richard H. Driehaus Architecture Competition: Aritz D\u00edez Oronoz and Imanol Iparraguirre, who presented the project with which they want to give Grajal de Campos its lost vitality back, and Sara Lob\u00f3n and Juan Moya, who presented their proposal for the harmonious growth of Vejer de la Frontera towards its western boundary. <\/p>\n

Robert Adam then highlighted the importance of memory and the respect for it in any intervention. Stefanos Polyzoides spoke of the need to regenerate architectural and urban culture. Manalee Nanavati argued that traditional architecture should be people-centred and did so through the experience of the Heritage Foundation of Pakistan. And finally, Marcel Vellinga presented different projects to promote vernacular architecture that are being carried out by the School of Architecture at Oxford Brookes University and the Paul Oliver Vernacular Architecture Library.<\/p>\n

On the second day, during the third session of the seminar, Enrique Rabasa spoke about the craft of stonemasonry. Forja Tiznajo presented their work and how the craft of forging is today endangered by the dictates of regulations and large corporations. Luis Prieto also highlighted the problem of the loss of knowledge in the use of traditional binders and the threat posed by the \u2018new\u2019 materials.<\/p>\n

In the last session, David Rivera presented the work of Jo\u017ee Ple\u010dnik for the transformation of Prague Castle. Mariana Correia showed the various teaching and research programmes on vernacular architecture that are being developed at the Escola Superior Gallaecia in Portugal. Ken de Cooman, from BC architects & studies, shared two of his most representative projects. Mieke Bosse showed the work carried out by the SCALA Architecten studio for the creation and strengthening of neighbourhoods and communities. And Jos\u00e9 Baganha, winner of the 2017 Rafael Manzano Prize, demonstrated through his work that tradition is not at odds with contemporaneity.<\/p>\n

Lastly, Alejandro Garc\u00eda Hermida presented the new initiatives that are being developed in Spain by INTBAU and thanks to the support of the Richard H. Driehaus Charitable Lead Trust to promote traditional construction and architecture in Spain and Portugal.
